Ever try to quit smoking cigarettes? OMG! I didn't realize how addictive they are, or even what addiction is. I loved smoking. There used to be all these amazing loose tobacco stores in NYC. So many different kinds of tobacco! So many smells. You just had to roll your own. NP. These tobaccos were tasty and satisfying.
Ready rolled are not nearly as satisfying. In fact, they make pleasure a sin. They are designed to deliver pleasure that lasts a few minutes, then has to be stimulated again by another cigarette.
We need pleasure. We long for it. This need is exploited by the chemicals in manufactured smokes that hook us and keep us addicted.
I've tried lots of ways to quit. Sometimes successfully for years. And acupuncture treatment was the most long lasting. Recently though, I fell into the trap of relieving my tension by taking a cigarette. Acupuncture is just so expensive. I turned to Chantix.
My neighbor gave me some. I didn't really research this, nor did I follow the instructions. What an experience! I had some serious allergic reactions. In one, my throat closed up and I couldn't breath or move. My guts clogged up, too. OMG. But...I quit smoking.
This is an amazing drug. Powerful beyond my wildest imagination. What it leads me to believe is that the chemicals put in cigarettes are equally powerful if it takes this kind of drug to overcome the addiction. What a shame. Smoking natural tobacco is fun and done in moderation is satisfying. We need satisfaction without it causing addiction.
I can't believe how expensive fresh food is. Fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh bread cost a lot more than canned food and wrapped bread. Every time I go shopping I get mad. Even a meat diet is less expensive than a vegetarian/vegan diet.
Why would it cost more than a meat diet?
I think of actuarial studies. Before a CVS will open in a neighborhood, there has to be projected proof of future substantial financial benefit. So how can a CVS pharmacy decide to invest? They have to know how profitable they will be depending on the measured and projected illnesses that would be expected.
It seems to me that a diet of meat, cheese, processed food and canned food guarantees certain illnesses and the use of certain products to alleviate predictable discomforts along the way, like bloating, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, bad skin.... Based on data collected about a neighborhood's habits, an actuarial study could recommend the profitability of a local CVS.
There is a Hindu expression that says we are food. When my grocery bill is higher than my meat eating friends', I am convinced that I am food! Food for our interwoven industries. Fresh vegetables usually taste so good, smell so good. I do, however, have to hunt for tomatoes that taste good, but generally, fresh vegetables taste better than canned. I remember my mom's penchant for canned peas and canned green beans. I can't believe I actually ate that. Even if you add spices, these peas have no taste and certainly no texture like fresh peas.
So, in order to stay alive and healthy, I have resorted to brown rice plus. A bag of brown rice costs a lot less than spaghetti and lasts longer. There are so many benefits to brown rice: vitamins, roughage...And you can be very creative to make a dish with brown rice as the main ingredient. Cabbage is also cheaper than other vegetables. Brown rice, cabbage, carrots, yes, black beans and freshly picked herbs from my garden makes a great main meal and stretches the budget! It's all about food combining, too. We do need protein, and brown rice and milk with spices helps to meet our needs. I really enjoy being healthy. I refuse to be food. One way or another, I know how to afford a healthy diet.
When I think of three little birds, I think of Bob Marley's song. I think of peace. It's such a large concept. How can we achieve it? Small acts help create the energy of good will. Christmas and the holiday giving season is around the corner and giving someone, a neighbor, a colleague helps spread the intention .
These three little birds have an interesting story. I used to practice various techniques to open my creative juices. This particular day, I placed my hair cutting scissors over my paper three times. I drew the holes for the fingers, and the space just below. Eyes and beaks popped out. Then the rest of them popped out: three little birds. They had to have something to sit on, so I held up a branch and drew its shadow.

Christmas is around the corner. — in Hollywood, Florida.
The Art Students League of NYC is a place that serious art students go, and have gone; many well known artists started there. I was fortunate to study there. No one left my home town for NY; I don't know why. It was only a 45 minute bus ride away.
I remember when we crossed the line in the tunnel between NJ and NY. My heart would race. I was free. I left the demands and duties and obligations to experience a freedom that was unavailable anywhere else. It was a sin to study art on Saturday. It was against the orthodox Sabboth rules of what was allowable and what was not. And New York itself was almost a forbidden world, yet, at the age of 15 I was allowed to explore this world.
Mr. Fini was the master teacher in our nude study class. Nudity was another of those forbidden subjects. Our models were of all shapes and sizes. It wasn't just the art that I learned there. During break, we would all assemble with the other classes, sitting on these wooden benches and around long wooden tables. Mr. Fini sat at the head.
I remember looking at Mr. Fini. He was 81. His eyes sparkled. He would talk about world events, art. He was doing his best work. I determined I would be like him. Whatever he was doing made him one of the most alive people in my world. I wanted to be alive like him. My parents were half his age and not nearly as alive. Mr. Fini's existence changed my world more than anything he taught, more than anyone else. I am forever grateful.
